Riding in the rain

Riding in the rain

What if it rains?

  • Wear a rain jacket, preferably with underarm vents and reflective or bright panels.
  • Consider using lights even in the daytime.
  • Keep a plastic shopping bag tucked under the seat to cover the seat when your bike is parked.
  • Take a change of clothes for your legs or wear waterproof overpants.
  • Fit mudguards to the front and back to minimise spatter.
  • Exercise extra caution as braking distances for both you and other vehicles increases in the wet.
  • Avoid metal surfaces such as tram tracks and drains that become extra slippery when wet.
  • Watch out for branches, glass and debris swept into your path by the rain.
  • If it rains at the end of the day and you'd rather not ride, leave your bike at work and ride home the next day.
