Why Cycle to Work?

Why Cycle to Work?

We give you 4 excellent reasons to cycle to work.....but once you start, you'll discover that there are many more advantages to two wheels.

1.) Save Time

Cycling to work is often quicker than other forms of transport. Research conducted by Bicycle Victoria has shown that for trips under 5km, it's usually quicker to cycle than to drive. At city peak times it is quicker to cycle than to drive for distances up to 15km!

2.) Improve your Health

Experts recommend 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day to prevent illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity. Exercise also reduces the risk of many cancers, depression and osteoporosis. Riding to work is a great way to get some daily exercise and you don't have to find the extra time to go to the gym. It's not just about long term health benefits, you'll feel better and have more energy today.

3.) Save Money

With fuel prices on the way up, there's never been a better time to switch to two wheels! Bicycle Victoria estimates that a bicycle costs around $250 per year (including maintenance and depreciation), a yearly Zone 1 metcard costs $1094 per year and a car between 50-75 cents per kilometre ($10-15,000 per year based on 20,000km). So the hip pocket savings are pretty obvious!

4.) Protect the Environment

If you ride instead of driving, you save approximately 500grams of greenhouse gas emissions for every kilometre travelled (AGO website). If you cycle 10 kilometres each way to work, 3 days a week, you'll save around 1500kg of GHG emission per year. In addition, 100 bicycles can be produced for the same amount of energy it takes to produce just 1 car. You'll also be pedalling for cleaner air and a less congesed city!
