Media Release - CPF Applauds Greens on $40m for cycling infrastructure
The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF) warmly welcomed the announcement that among the amendments to the $42 billion stimulus package the Greens successfully negotiated with the Australia Government was a $40 million fund for bikeways.
'The cycling sector has long been calling for increased funding in cycling infrastructure to help Australians fight climate change, the obesity epidemic, congestion and make our cities more liveable,' Mr Stephen Hodge, spokesperson for the CPF said.
'The $40 million fund is a great and significant start to this and, importantly, given the current economic climate, is also expected to create between 500 and 700 local jobs.'
This announcement comes at a time when Australians are already speaking with their 'pedals'.
In 2008, for the ninth year in a row Australian bicycle sales outstripped motor vehicle sales. And, Australians are not just buying bikes, they are using them increasingly frequently.
Census figures show a 28% increase in riding to work across Australian capital cities. This growth is largely centred in areas with superior levels of bicycle infrastructure.
'A $40 million investment in bikeways will play an important role in tackling some of today's most pressing issues-obesity, climate change, congestion, petrol prices-while also helping to create hundreds of local jobs,' Mr Hodge said.
'We congratulate the Greens on their efforts, welcome the Government's agreement to this amendment and urge the Senate to pass this package.'
