Getting the wheels in motion
THE Federal Government has signalled that an injection of investment in Australia's infrastructure may be an effective way of boosting a slowing economy. If done well and smartly the right sort of infrastructure spending can go a long way in helping address climate change, transport, congestion and fuel prices. The Department of Climate Change predicts transport's contribution to climate change will leap 67% above 1990 levels by 2020 and the CSIRO predicts that petrol could hit $8 a litre by 2018. Cycling is the most sustainable transport of all, but it needs government support. The bicycle may offer a surprisingly elegant response to climate change, congestion, the obesity epidemic and fuel prices amid the economic turmoil.
