Promoting Walking and Cycling to work: lessons from New Zealand
This OPEN ACCESS journal article looks at walking and cycling as transport to work across varying communities across New Zealand and the world, and makes conclusions on how to increase rates. They conclude that the success of European countries, over that of Australia and NZ "is attributed to the "coordinated implementation of the multi-faceted, mutually reinforcing set of policies" in the past few decades, such as provision of better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, extensive traffic calming of residential neighbourhoods, increased traffic regulation and enforcement, people oriented urban design, integration with public transport, comprehensive traffic education and training, restrictions on car ownership, use and parking and workplace travel plans."
